Recording: Dalasinfoniettan

On Tuesday 8th March, my university project group and I recorded Dalarna’s Orchestra Dalasinfoniettan at their rehearsal studio in Falun. It is a project for our current course module titled ‘Möten Med Skilda Genrer’ meaning ‘Meetings with different genres’. We had to choose a genre that we are not particularly familiar with and meet a field recording of an artist or band of that genre.

We got in touch with the orchestra and asked if we could record them during one of their rehearsal periods. Our group decided we didn’t have the time nor the space for any close miking so we aimed to capture the orchestra as a whole.

We used a stereo miking technique called a ‘Decca Tree’ using a Neumann U87 in the front and centre and two Neumann TLM103s placed to the left and right. We wanted to experiment a little so we also placed an extra pair of outriggers to the far left and right as well as an XY coincident pair of small diaphragm condenser microphones.
