Recording: Ocean Arda

I assisted Jack Hudson on a recording session with a jazz fusion band called ‘Ocean Arda’ at the studios in Coventry University. We recorded two instrumental tracks. One was the band’s own composition and another was a funked up cover of the jazz classic ‘Autumn Leaves’.

We recorded the band live in the same room at the same time. We pointed all of the amps away from the drum kit to minimize spill. They also didn’t use headphones as they could all hear each other well in the room.

We wanted to get a distinctly jazz vibe from the drum setup so we only used three mikes. We used an AKG D112 on the kick drum (above).  For overheads we used a matched pair of Coles 4038 ribbon mikes left and right (below).

Bass and Guitar

To record the bass we took a direct signal from a D.I. box and the player used an amp in the room.

For the guitarist we miked his amplifier with an AKG C451B.

The keyboard player was using Midi from his keyboard to control a virtual instrument on his laptop which was amped in the room via his interface. We took a stereo signal from the interface straight into the desk.

We are still yet to mix and release the songs we recorded but you can check out their demo on Soundcloud in the link below:
